I have traveled to Cuba several times over the years, and each time have visited different parts of the country. My first experience, about 15 years ago, was in Varadero. Just last month, I went back to experience it again! The famous peninsula is well worth a visit if you love pristine beaches, enjoy strolling the city streets … and love the nightlife!
The so-called “Blue Beach of Cuba”, Varadero is one of the best resort destinations in the world! With its 22 km of white, sandy beaches, Varadero has other natural attractions as well including escarpments, caves and incredible seascapes.

Buena Vista Social Club
If you want to listen to traditional Cuban music, make sure to go see a performance by this band! Originally from Havana, this band is made up of four (4) groups that travel the country. Buena Vista was a famous club in Havana that in the 90s inspired a recording by the Cuban musician Juan de Marcos Gonzales and US guitar player Ry Cooder together with traditional Cuban musicians, many of them former members of the club who performed there when their popularity was strong. The recording, named after the club, became a worldwide hit. Several musicians over 70 years old joined the project that brought many of them back from oblivion. The band performed with the full cast in Amsterdam in 1998 and was filmed by Germany’s Win Wenders. The documentary, also named Buena Vista Social Club, was nominated for an Oscar as best long-feature documentary and won in the same category at the European Film Awards. Make sure to go see them!
Shopping
If you need a break from the beach during your vacation, maybe a day of shopping will be good for you! There are several place to shop on the peninsula. Plaza Las Americas Convention Centre hosts Varadero’s largest mall with dozens of outlets, restaurants, bars and coffee-shops. Centro Comercial Hicacos also offers a supermarket, lots of shops and cafes. Be sure to check out the Casa de Chocolate and try the chocolates – they are amazing! Plaza Artesanal and Mercado de Artesanato, close to Hicacos, are two large outdoor markets where you can find locally made souvenirs, like paintings, jewellery and wooden memorabilia.

Josone Retreat Park
The park was the idea of a married couple that in 1942 dreamed of a place where their love would line on. Jose Iturrioz and Onelia Mendez joined the first three letters of their first names and Josone was born, a marvelous garden which took three years to build. Until 1963, the beautiful and large house was the residence of the Iturioz family. Years later, Josone Retreat, with several restaurants and vars, was made available to tourists, and at present it is one of Varadero’s most visited spots. the tunnel from the facility to the beach that the millionaire owner ordered dub under 1st Avenue is still in use.
Well, it happened again. It’s now the second time that I’m visiting a world renown city and fall in love with it after avoiding it for so long – London! (can you guess what the first city was?) I was in London recently for a few days on a work trip after being invited to […]
This summer I had the opportunity to visit Cape Cod, an absolutely fascinating place! Cape Cod is a long and narrow peninsula that projects itself prominently out from the southern Massachusetts mainland and into the Atlantic Ocean. It is perhaps the most distinctive geographical feature along the New England coast. The peninsula is fairly large […]
The world’s most northerly capital, Reykjavík has a sense of space and calm that will come as a breath of fresh air to travellers more accustomed to the bustle of the traffic-clogged streets of many capital cities. The Greater Reykjavík area is home to two out of every three Icelanders! Reykjavík is also home to an […]
Pittsburgh is the dominant city of southwestern Pennsylvania, a place that has successfully transformed from a polluted, working-class steel town into one of the most livable cities.
Vacationing on USA’s east coast comes with all the bells and whistles of a summer vacation, plus more. I had the chance recently to visit the famous town of Newport, Rhode Island – and I fell in love with it! Newport – population 24,000 – offers a fascinating mix of small town charm, dynamic culture, […]
The amazing scenery, traditional village life, cities defined by contemporary blended with historical remnants, warm and friendly people, amazing food and pastries, and many more define this western European country. Portugal is an amazing place to visit – here are the top 10 must see and do while there.
I had the pleasure of going back to Montréal this summer – I hadn’t been since I was a kid! There are a few places that I remembered vividly since my childhood summer vacations, but also many that I got to see for the first time walking around the city by myself. Montréal is definitely the most European style city in Canada (although some would argue that Québec City takes the top spot) – great transit connections, multilingual population yet narrow streets, cars zooming by constantly honking at bad drivers, pot holes everywhere, small apartments, etc. But Montréal has a charm that you can’t ignore – it’s restaurants, vibrant night life, European architecture, and summer events.
Well, made my way back to Ottawa this week. Drove down from Toronto on Sunday and I am here until Friday for work – mostly networking with some government officials and other people from industry organizations. I love Ottawa – been here a few times already. For some reason, now it just feels like I am coming […]
Ada Kaleh (or Island Fortress in Turkish) was a small island on the Romanian side of the Danube River. In 1970, the government evacuated its approximately 600 inhabitants and submerged the island during the construction of the Iron Gates hydroelectric plant. The island was approximately 1.7 km long and 500 m wide. Ada Kaleh was situated […]
