Italy – August 2010

Things to do in San Remo:

1. The Sanremo Casino The current casino building was actually built as a theatre in 1905. The architecture was designed by Eugene Ferret, a French architect. In 1928, the theatre was officially turned into the Casino di Sanremo. For awhile now it has also hosted the famous annual music festival, il Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo.

2. Torre della Ciapela – This mediaeval cylindrical tower overlooks the Piazza del Mercato, the area where the weekend market takes places. Historically, Torre della Ciapela was once a watchtower within the defensive walls around Sanremo.

3. Chisa Russa Ortodossa – Completed in 1913, this impressive Russian Orthodox church is dedicated to the Saviour and Saint Catherine. It was designed after Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow and was built at a time when the Russian bourgeoisie flocked to Sanremo to escape the harsh winters of the homeland. Sanremo became known to the Russians after Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna began promoting it, following a vacation she had taken here in 1874.

4. Pastry Shops – I can not emphasize how important it is to taste some Italian pastries. Freshly made, melt-into-your-mouth creations are amazing ! Even if you’re sweets fan, you will appreciate what San Remo has to offer.

5. San Remo Music Festival – If you happen to be in San Remo in February or March, you may want to attend the famous music festival.

6. Walk along the beach – San Remo has very nice beaches overlooking the cool blue waters of the Ligurian Sea. They are great places to just lay back and relax or take a walk and meet some of the people. There is a nice walkway along part of the beach.
